GONG LI AT BFI SOUTHBANK. ‘A CENTURY OF CHINESE CINEMA: NEW WAVE’

Three films of the Chinese Super Star Gong Li will be shown in the ‘New Wave’ Section of the “A Century of Chinese Cinema” this August in the BFI: British Film Institute in Southbank.

Gong Li is one of the most beautiful and most successful actresses who has come out of China. Her powerful performances and mesmerizing beauty brought her into spotlight in the international world of cinema.

This film was Cinematographer turned Director Yimou Zhang’s Directorial Debut. Yimou Zhang discovered Gong Li and placed her in the lead role, thus giving her, her Acting Debut. Her powerful performance in this film made her move on in her acting career, enabling her to get parts in more and more successful films.

It’s a film that is different from other Yimou Zhang films which were mostly depicting the historical side of China. It is another of Yimou Zhang’s successful masterpieces, especially when Gong Li works alongside him as his muse.
