MAGGIE CHEUNG AT THE BFI SOUTH BANK. ‘A CENTURY OF CHINESE CINEMA: NEW DIRECTIONS’.

Three films of the Hong Kong Super Star Maggie Cheung will be shown in the ‘New Directions’ Section of the “A Century of Chinese Cinema” this September and October in the BFI: British Film Institute in Southbank.

Maggie Cheung is one of the most serious actresses that have come out of Hong Kong. She started her work in 1983 mostly in comedy/action films alongside Super Star Jackie Chan, but later moved on to doing more serious roles which proved in giving her a successful career in show business.

Teaming up with Director Stanley Kwan, Maggie Cheung portrays the character of a real life actress Ruan Lingyu who had a tragically short lived life in the spotlight. This film helped Maggie Cheung turn towards serious film roles. Portraying actress Ruan Lingyu in a very complex yet elegant manner, Maggie Cheung proved that she is a serious artist. It also won her four Best Actress awards from 1991 to 1993.

Proving herself to be able to do romantic roles, Maggie Cheung took this challenge in Director Peter Chan’s film. A woman finds herself head over heels in love with a man from Mainland, which starts from friendship towards a serious relationship. This film won her five Best Actress awards in 1997.

One of many collaborations with Legendery Director Wang Kar Wai, Maggie Cheung gives her best performance in this film. Two individuals, whose spouses are disloyal to them, find each other in love, only to stay back because of tradition and the forever observing eyes of society. She won five Best Actress awards, including Best Foreign Actress award in 2001 and 2002.
