6 Greatest Personalities Of The 20th Century Worth Reading About

The 20th century held in it some very important historical occurrences, and among them were personalities who were shaped up to be the greatest in their life. Their lives and struggles had a direct effect on the world where revolutions occurred, humility spread and inspirations grew.  Below are the six greatest personalities who shaped up the world of the 20th century.

1 – Muhammad Ali Jinnah (25 December 1876 – 11 September 1948)

‘Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Muhammad Ali Jinnah did all three.’ – Prof Dr. Stanley Wolpert. Jinnah was the founder of Pakistan. He was a lawyer and a politician, and his struggles for the Muslims of India in the troubled times under the British rule can not be ignored. He single handedly lead an entire nation to freedom by gifting it an independent country. Sir Christpher Lee, the late British actor considered the role of Jinnah as his most favourite of all. He starred in the film JINNAH as Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

2 – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948))

M. K. Gandhi was the preeminent leader of Indian Independence Movement in British India. His struggles against racism, violence and colonialism in South Africa and India gave him a notoriety. During the troubled times of India under the British rule, he encouraged nonviolent civil disobedience against the British. He lead the Indian nation towards its independence until his assassination on 30th January, 1948. His struggles have been immortalised in the film GANDHI, starring Ben Kingsley.

3 – Abdul Sattar Edhi (28 February 1928 – 8 July 2016)

“The world’s greatest living humanitarian.” The Huffington Post. Abdul Sattar Edhi, commonly known by his last name Edhi was a philanthropist, ascetic and a humanitarian who founded the Edhi Foundation in Pakistan. The foundation runs different hospitals, orphanages, homeless shelters and rehab centers across the country. His selfless devotion to humanity went beyond religion, caste and borders where his foundation provided relief operations in Africa, Middle East, the Caucasus region, eastern Europe and the United States of America following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was tipped about getting a Nobel Peace Prize, but never showed an interest in it. His legacy lives on in Pakistan even after his death.

4 – Mother Teresa (26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997)

Mother Teresa, also known in the Catholic Church as Saint of Calcutta was an Albanian-Indian, who devoted her life to helping people. Her Missionaries of Charity foundation established in 1950 provided homes to people suffering from HIV Aids, leprosy and tuberculosis. For her contribution to humanity she was also awarded with a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She has also been a controversial figure for some during and after her death.

5 – Princess Diana Spencer (1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997)

Diana Spencer, who became a Princess after marrying Prince Charles. While married she also bored the titles of Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay and Countess of Chester. Even though she was a princess, she still had a very humble personality. Her life seemed like a fairy tale until her divorce from Prince Charles. Although her life was marred by controversy, she was greatly praised for her humanitarian works which included the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and dozens of charities the funds of which went on to support people suffering from HIV Aids, Cancer and Leprosy. Even after her untimely death, she is still a Princess for her admirers.

6 – Muhammad Ali (January 17, 1942 – June 3, 2016)

Muhammad Ali is the greatest sports personality of the 20th century. Born as Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., his life turned around when he vowed to beat up the guy who stole his bicycle. While looking for him he ended up in a boxing training camp where he took up the sport. Little did he know that he would go on in life to become the greatest champion the world has ever seen. He also went on to become an Activist for the rights of the Black Americans during the 1960s Civil Rights Movements. His conversion to Islam brought great controversies but his persistence kept him high and going. Different  movies have been made on the sportsman, but the one that stands above all is the one in which he starred himself.
