Comedian Russell Brand has been accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse by four women who have now come forward. While all women spoke anonymously, the first woman alleged that Russell raped her in his Los Angeles home and showed medical records that she was treated at a rape crisis center the same day.

Another woman who was 16 at the time claimed that Russell got into a sexual relationship with her and told that he ‘forced his penis down her throat’, maintained a manipulative behaviour throughout the relationship and was referred to as ‘The Child’. She was also asked to read passages from ‘Lolita‘ out loud.

Two more women also accused Russell of sexual assault. One of the women was threatened with a legal action by Russell if she ever spoke publicly about the incident.

Russell following the allegations against him responded with a video titled ‘So, This Is Happening’ which was posted on YouTube and other social media platforms, in which he addresses the allegations directly and denied all claims of non-consensual acts.

He said: “These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream media, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies. And as I’ve written about extensively in my books I was very, very promiscuous. Now during that time of promiscuity the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that then — almost too transparent — and I’m being transparent about it now as well.

YouTube has now suspended the monetization on Russell’s channel which has 6.6 million subscribers. A YouTube spokesperson told the UK Media outlets that “If a creator’s off-platform behaviour harms our users, employees or ecosystem, we take action.”

Russell’s live stand-up shows in the UK have been postponed and his publisher Bluebird have said that it will pause all future publishing
