Taiwan’s Hu Hsiao Hsien is a very well-known name among the world of film directors. His film ‘The Time to Live and the Time to Die (1985)’ was one of his very first masterpieces which was shown in ‘The Century of Chinese Cinema: New Wave’ at the BFI Southbank. It was a film which moved the audience in every way possible.

This month in the ‘Passport to Cinema’ section, BFI is showing ‘Three Times’ Directed by Hu Hsiao Hsien. Starring Shu Qi opposite Chang Chen, the film tells three stories set in three different time frames; one in 1911, the second in 1966 and the last one in 2005.

Originally this film was intended to be shown in three different stories directed by three different directors, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, Hsu Hsiao Hsien ended up directing the complete film.
